This was a welcome change in location in crime reading.
The island of Camaho owes much to the author's home island Grenada and the story mixes modern policing procedures in an old fashioned island where brutality against women is the norm and religion is an excuse of patriarchal excesses.
I liked the idea of a new police department created from young men literally picked of the street and the main character Michael Digson becomes a forensic expert after a year in England, hence the bone reader. As he investigates disappearances on the island he clashes with his police friend/rival, politicians and religious leaders, with the help of a strong female colleague.
Great characters and plot leave me looking forward to more in what is going to be a four book series.

Once you start, you can't stop. A thrilling and immersive crime novel set in the Caribbean. Excellent.
