Molly Shannon has such a wonderful and joyous outlook on life. I didn’t know much about her before and I still really enjoyed this memoir. She definitely has a story to tell and a unique outlook.

HIGHLY recommend the audiobook! Molly really brings the words to life with a lot of flair.

I liked this so so much. I liked the non-linear style, and I couldn't believe how upbeat Ms. Shannon has stayed through her whole life. Her relationship with her father felt disconcertingly familiar. She really captured the helplessness that children feel when their primary caregivers are inconsistent. But I think the most important part of this book is that Ms. Shannon doesn't apologize for any of her success. She easily says how successful things were and how funny they were and she's genuinely proud of her hustle without trying to downplay it. It was really refreshing. Absolutely recommend listening to the audiobook.

Well, the prologue of this book made me cry and then the final chapters made me cry again. What a bookend. :) Molly Shannon’s memoir is largely focused around her parents and their huge effects on her life, both her mother’s tragic death when she was 4 to how her father lovingly yet with volatility raised she and her sister. Molly’s seemingly never-ending well of earnestness was on full display throughout the book. A few times it felt jarring, but that also might have been her narration, as I listened on audio. Career-wise she spoke more about getting started and then SNL highlights than her later career. I would have liked a little more about her relationships with her SNL cast mates as that’s such a classic group, but I really enjoyed hearing the origins of some of her more famous characters, and it did lead to a very fun YouTube binge of Dog Show sketches. (An aside- wow at the casual homophobia and racism that was on tv not that long ago!) If you are a fan of Molly’s work, this is a must read, it’s a fascinating glimpse into how a persons sense of self and self expression and sense of humor are shaped.
