- Iz and Warren were a bit unique as characters which was cool. It was nice to see characters in a strong marriage. But, their characterizations felt like they were told to me more than something I got to see. I did not connect to them as characters.
- The worldbuilding had some interesting bits but wasn't explored enough for my taste. Because I didn't know much, many of the twists came from things I didn't know about the worldbuilding and thus didn't know were possible. So, there was no foreshadowing for the twists.
- I was not engaged in the mystery. I don't care about the
royal family. Also, clearlythe kid was going to be the king's. That was obvious and I saw that twist coming from a million miles away. - The main characters having a magical bag that can basically give them any artifact that could help with any problem seemed cheap to me.
So, I was sadly disappointed from this book. I do not see myself continuing with the series.

I finished this a while ago and I am still laughing at a description towards the beginning, where a character with a broad mustache is described as eating a sandwich like slipping an envelope into a mail slot, or something along those lines. And a little while later it said he "posted another sandwich." Simple, witty descriptions like these just light me up.
I was definitely bored with the main mystery, however. It wasn't what I was interested in at all, only all of the imaginative things happening alongside it. But then towards the end there were twists on twists, and I was back in the game. I wish the mystery had captivated me from the beginning and that there was a through line that kept me going.
I'll definitely read more though, and I'm hoping the next one will be even better!

The elements of the plot as they were revealed and understood weren't really new when it comes to the selfishness of nobility and royalty, but the surrounding building blocks of the story were really what pushed the pace and kept me hooked.
