I felt that the entire story was based on the slavery of African-Americans and reworked into a fantasy story about werewolves. The werewolves were sold into slavery. They were not allowed to learn how to read or write those that lead others to freedom were called conductors it was all the little two on the nose for a woman of African-descent.
While I did initially like the story once it became obvious that it was basically a werewolf version of African-American history, it became a very distasteful read for me.

Really cool addition to the shifter book genre. Totally unique world with a kick-ass heroine living as a slave. Gritty but touching in a lot of ways.
