Interesting historical fiction which dragged at points but was gripping at others. The pivotal event of the book - the Fetterman Fight - was an interesting choice since ultimately Crazy Horse and the Native Americans in general rapidly lost their way of life in the following years despite their victory at the fort. It was a very bittersweet ending knowing the future to come for the tribes.

Obviously a lot of liberties were taken with the characterisation of historical figures, but it made for an engaging story even if there was an undercurrent of a "few bad apples" settler narrative.

A historical fiction retelling of the Fetterman Massacre. Direct and well written. Prose is strong and reads as a story. Punke took creative liberty in the characters thoughts and behaviors that I felt complement the true account.
