Reread this book because I thought it would be a quick and fun throwback. I think part of the reason why I'm rating it lower than last time is because the twist does not hit as hard the second time lol. Still pretty good and an easy read.

Review from August 2022:

I LOVED this book. For a 400+ page book it kept me hooked and the plot twist made me want to re-read the whole story again. This was insanely sad and I love how the characters are written. Overall, a must-read!!!

I've had this book on my TBR for awhile, pretty much ever since I read Grown by Jackson. This story is about two young girls who are best friends, Claudia and Monday. Inseparable since always, Claudia is perplexed to find that Monday is nowhere to be found on the first day of 8th grade. Where is she? Why does her phone number no longer work? Did she leave home? Does she just not want to be Claudia's friend anymore? Is she missing? This book is described as a thriller but it was more like heavy drama with a side of mystery. As Claudia tries to piece together the sudden disappearance of Monday, the reader goes on a journey of insufferable moments in  adolescence and the power of secrets, of school bullies and the challenges that shape us,  where the failures of family, community, and systems harm the most innocent amongst us.  This book is a work of fiction but the story is very much real.  It broke my heart in many ways and by the end I was a mess.  I recommend anyone going into this book have a first aid kit and box of tissues, because it will cut you deep enough to leave a scar.

I don't have the words to explain how incredible this book was and how it impacted me. All I will say is that it was a harrowing and masterfully written story that gripped me from beginning to end.

I have cried so much during this book I don't know if I have any more tears left in me.
There are so many important but hard to read themes in this book and all of them are written in a way that just clenches your guts because it feels so real. I've cried because of the bullying, I've cried because of Claudia's tangible loneliness and most of all I cried out of frustration because no one cared enough and listened to a desperate teenage girl.
I also loved the structure of the book. Give me multiple timelines, jumble them up and I will read it. Yes, the structure was confusing but I just went with it. I don't know if I would have realised some details earlier if I had read this as a physical book. But I listened to it on audio book (the narrator is AMAZING!) and 2/3s in I had the feeling that I missed something but I couldn't really turn back the pages to check so I just accepted it. Yeah, in the end everything made perfect sense. And I love this aspect of the book as well.
So, the ending broke me. On so many levels. But I'm really glad I've read this.
