A lovely YA series, beautifully written with a captivating world. The audiobook is wonderful.

The wonder of learning about this rich world and the novelty of a new story kept me distracted during the first book. But while reading this one, I became more and more cognizant of the "tell, don't show" writing style. While pleasant enough to make the story go by quickly, it distanced me from the characters and their struggles/feelings. It was hard to care with Xingyin when I found her increasingly abrasive, hot-tempered, and brash. Wenzhi frustrated me to no end with his persistent "I know what's truly in your heart despite what you are insisting to me" attitude, and I just felt horrible seeing Liwei's treatment throughout the book.
Even the reunion of Xingyin's parents fell flat for me because of how little it impacted the story or her character growth.

um hello this duology has such beautiful writing????!?? in love with everything about these two books

the writing in this duology is so beautiful it makes me want to write a love letter to the author. listening to this book i was in awe that basically every other line was like poetry i swear. this plot differed a lot from the first book but not in a bad way! i loved all the action and the growth each character experienced and the ending had me in tears. very in love with this world and this story (
