The only thing I love about these books is Maven. He is such a complicated character and I love him dearly.

Maven once again saved this horrible abomination.

Spoiler Tell me why does Mare end up with Cal? He chose THRONE over HER TWICE!!! If a man does that he should be glad he doesn't have red mark on his face from my hand

First off, I really love multiple POVs. I love Cameron's POVs. They gives insight of the Scarlet Guard operation and her feelings towards herself and people around her. Cameron reminds me a bit of Mare. And I also love Evangeline POVs because I got to read her love towards Elane.

And second of all, why is Maven so hot in this book. Especially the bathroom scene wtf. Mare and Cal's moments together too wtf. This book is just *chef kiss*

ALSO OMG THE EPILOGUE?!??!???!!?!!? WTF VICTORIA!!!!!๐Ÿ˜ค๐Ÿ˜ค๐Ÿ˜ค

In this book we can see Maven's ruling of Norta after the death of his mother. And because of that, we can truly see that a lot of his ruling drives from his obsession to Mare.ย  For him, it was never about conquer and rule Norta, but his obsession towards Mare. Because of this obsession, his throne slowly losing its supports. And what's so crazy is that Reds and even Silvers (only at the beginning) believe Maven and Queen Elara fully. Like in Glass Sword both of them even broadcast that Mare is a terrorist and murderer and now in King's Cage, he saif Scarlet Guard manipulates her for their scheme. Both Reds and Silvers believe them, until a rebellion start in the Royal Court.

We can also see that because of Elara's whisper, Maven went from a nice, isolated boy to the most dangerous boy in the world. Now I see why he doesn't fit to be a king. Even in Red Queen is very hard to imagine him as a king. Not because he's Queen Elara's son, but because he grows up learning only to be a prince while Cal grows up to be a king. Cal knows how to rule, Maven doesn't. That's why his throne is always shaky.

I think the reason why Maven loved (or obsessed in this case) Mare so much because he grows up with his mother always whispering this and that in his head, his father doesn't take notice of him, children of High Houses always underestimate him, etc until he met Mare. In Red Queen, she loved and adored him because he was supporting the idea of Reds should be released from their oppressors. But things change.

I think even during in Glass Sword, when Queen Elara was still at his side, whispering him what to do on the throne, his ruling was still based on Mare. For example, in Glass Sword, he kills Newbloods just so Mare can surrender herself to him and keep her for himself. In King's Cage, Maven made peace with Lakeland all because he wants to win Mare back but his too stupid to think that. Because of his alliance with Lakeland, he lost the most important High House for his throne. Pretty sure, if Queen Elara is alive, she will try her best to know let Maven lose one of the most important High Houses for the throne.

As for Cal and other Silvers, I think they're very stupid to build a throne when they're already losing. Scarlet Guard already did so many changes and open so many Reds' eyes about the oppression of Silvers on them. So, it's not very smart to build a throne on a kingdom that's already starting to change. Silvers are very greedy for power. They're still in their bubbles that Reds will stay as their slaves and them as their oppressors. Nope, they're wrong. They're very wrong indeed.

But right now, I'm so mad at Cal, after everything he saw and been with the Scarlet Guard, he's still wants to be a king. He knows how much Silvers' oppression effects Reds and yet he still choose the Crown over Mare.

Kingโ€™s cage was definitely a better read than Glass Sword, but does not quite add up to Red Queen. Mare Barrow is consistently an unlikable character focused primarily on herself the majority of the book.

I really enjoyed this book. Having the characters split gave them some extra time for progression (both character and plot).

While I get why Mare would be kept prisoner for so long, I would have preferred more interactions with the court, if not with Maven.
Spoiler Even bringing in Evangeline's POV chapters earlier would have helped that section fill out a bit more, even if it tipped her family's hand a bit.

Cameron was an interesting POV for the Scarlet Guard/red side of things, which again left much of the political machinations off the page, but at least gave the basics. Even Kilorn would have been a better choice, in my opinion.ย

I feel like the final third of the book dragged a bit, at least up until the climax,
Spoiler the second battle at Corvium.
It just felt like the pacing was off after
Spoiler Mare was rescued by the Scarlet Guard.
I think there was too much build up in the beginning that didn't leave enough room for the three bigger battles.

Finally,
Spoiler I know we should want Cal to choose Mare, but I don't think he's wrong to ask Mare to choose him instead. I'm hoping there is a way for compromise in the final book, but I'm happy that each of them are actually dealing with what they want instead of throwing away their convictions, training, or lives.

Overall, this was a strong sequel, and I was surprised by a few things; I'm very excited to read the final book and the short stories.

I really loved this book, itโ€™s better than the previous one.

โ›”๏ธ Spoilers ahead โ›”๏ธ

Spoiler
I loved Cameron and Evangeline POVs and enjoyed being in their heads for a change. Mare is good but she canโ€™t pick aside just like Cal, sheโ€™s desperate and in love-hate relationship with Maven โ€ฆ yes she hates him but at the same time heโ€™s all she can think about and want his attention and get jealous and want to convince herself she doesnโ€™t care about him all the time.
ย
Mavenโ€™s back story just broke me, i mean i guessed before his mother did something with his brain but I didnโ€™t imagine it to be that bad, sheย  converted him into a sociopath and i just hated her more.
and can we talk about how the bath tub scene is THE BEST .. I donโ€™t know why but my heart broke into millions and millions pieces after reading that chapter it was so great i felt every emotion โ€ฆ Iโ€™m not ready to read how my mavey baby gonna die ๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ’”

This one is soooo much better than the Glass Sword. It is crazy of the development of all the characters. It started off really slow but after that it got a lot better and the different povโ€™s made the story of all the characters a lot better.
