John Christopher ups the excitement in the second volume of this classic series. However, even with more action sequences, he manages to keep a thoughtful tone to the book and has the young protagonists contemplate some moral gray areas. I'm pleasantly surprised at how much I am enjoying a series that I read when I was young - great stuff!

An improvement on the previous volume, much better pacing and some real horror considering it's a children's book. Still mainly reading for nostalgia reasons so being old and jaded probably reduces the rating a bit.

Things got weird in this book. Not at all what we were expecting as a sequel. We got a little bored toward the middle and it's odd that such a short book would feel so slow but it did. We did ultimately want to know how things ended so we kept going and it picked up toward the end. I'm not sure we "liked" it but we didn't "dislike" it either.

Ok just finished the second one which I like quiet a bit more then the first one. Although it did give me a greater appreciation for the first one. Hopefully the third one keeps this coming.

Favorite middle grade novel cover illustrated by Roger Hane. In seventh grade, we had to read a sci fi book. I fell in love with this book's cover and then the book.

Can't wait to reread this book!
