DNF

It's one of these books that try too hard, there are so many clichés / stereotypes that it gets lost and you don't even know where the author wants to go. At least give me characters that I can like; I read the first two stories and I just couldn't care less about their lives, just wanted it to be over and we're talking short stories...

Confused as to what so great about this book

Sadly I think this is over rated, but I enjoyed the diversity of characters and the telling of stories not usually heard.

J'ai beaucoup aimé les nuances dans les visions du monde et l'énergie qui se dégage de l'ensemble.

what didn't entirely work for me was the format - this book reads like a short story collection and I tend to struggle with those. it's divided into 13 parts and follows 12 different characters from early 1900s to modern Britain. because there are so many characters and each of them gets their own chapter, we get to spend more or less 30 pages with each character, and for me personally that's not nearly enough to get into the story. every time I started enjoying a certain chapter and getting sucked into the character's life - it ended, and I had to start from the beginning. again, because this reads like a short story collection, there were some characters whose story I was more invested in (Dominique, Morgan) and some I didn't really like and found their chapters difficult to get through (Winsome). I am still glad to have read this book and I would recommend it to people who won't mind the structure and are looking for books that discuss topics such as race, class, sexuality, gender and motherhood.
