Ariel Gore’s memoir of her time as a caregiver to her abusive mother diagnosed with terminal cancer is darkly funny, beautifully no-holds-barred, and just so honestly human. When you are dying for a dose of vulnerable, powerful, wry, and witchy reality—turn to Ariel Gore.
Graphic: Death of parent, Cancer, Toxic relationship, Medical content, and Terminal illness
Moderate: Child abuse, Physical abuse, and Suicide
Minor: Animal death, Body horror, Classism, Alcohol, and Vomit

This book brought me once again to the place in my psyche that seems necessary to my life--sharp darkness right next to truth and humor. Ms. Gore captures the debilitating tension we can feel with our mothers. Her mother was troubled and troubling; Ms. Gore creates a life full of characters and love and work in spite of the harrowing and abrasive experiences she has with Eve.
The writing is warm, but not fuzzy. All caregivers should read this.
Set mostly in New Mexico, the landscape is brought to life and to my memories.

a captivating page-turner, both hilariously funny and devastatingly sad. for those with crazy parents and unhelpful life partners. for the observant and the wacky. for you, maybe.

I fucking love Ariel Gore. This book is just as amazing as all her other ones; a harrowing and funny tale revolving around the aging/dying of her mother. Ariel’s voice is so unique to her and I LOVE it.
