Heartwarming, surprisingly funny, just purely magical. I loved every single part of this book. Time to watch Casablanca!

My favorite quote: “If you are ever in doubt, just remember that unlike adults, children want to be happy. So they still have the ability to take the greatest pleasure in the simplest things."

Eh. I think I was expecting something different from this book. I was thinking something was going to happen but nothing really happens; this book is veeeerrryyy slow.

This was the closest I’ve been to a DNF book. The only thing that kept me engaged was the superb quality of the writing.

The second half of the book is miles better than the first half, but again, nothing happens. I feel like a greater story could be built off the idea of someone on house arrest indefinitely in a Russian hotel where high level people stay.

Personally, I rate the book 2 ⭐️ but I can see why this book gets a lot of praise due to the writing. If you are planning to read this book just know it’s very slow and not much happens.

This seems to be a story about the kind of man that rich men delude themselves into thinking they are. The perfect Gary Stu of a protagonist is hated by people for being better according to the book. His only 'flaw' involved being furious with a man for hurting his sister. Then there's the book portraying the Soviet Union as being exactly as US propaganda pretends that it was. This is very much a pro-rich propaganda piece.

Read half of it last year for book club and only just got around to finishing it so a bit stilted and disjointed but that's my fault. I enjoyed the second half a lot more than I remember the first half, it didn't really get me hooked at the time but by the end I was enjoying it a lot.

Honestly I was bored and I never felt pulled into the story. I didn’t feel compelled to care about the characters
