oh wow. where to even start? a unique, extremely dark, and satirical take on the constraints and pressures of society’s expectations: a portrayal of extreme anomie. murata did not hold back on the scrutiny. she captured the whimsical and overactive imagination of children so perfectly, especially when it came to processing trauma. this was an amazing portrayal of childhood trauma and how that affects people differently in adulthood. the last two chapters or so were a whirlwind of “wtf” but i was still captivated. extremely excited to read convenience store woman.

This book is marketed as a horror book but there is a difference between horror and depravity... this isn't horror. One thing I will say is that they depicted abuse perfectly. Unfortunately there is no help for those struggling in this story. Trigger warning for those interested: child abuse, sexual abuse, suicide, incest, cannibalism, victim blaming, and a large amount of undiagnosed/ untreated mental health issues.

This book, do not be fooled by the cover! It is very dark in a lot of moments in the book!
Murata writes this book as a social commentary of women’s roles (such as having to marry and have children) and how being out of those roles in society can lead to dark places. It is a coming of age story about this girl Natsuki. Throughout her life, there are a lot of troubling things (please read TWs!) that plague her life and she never really learns how to respond appropriately to these issues or have effective coping strategies. She eventually meets her husband in this kind of “separate” marriage where they live together but they never really interact, having this unfulfilling relationship.
Murata explores these issues through Natsuki’s perspective and how it is very much upfront on the message through very extreme ways. The ending is very much a surprise and it is a very well written book just read TWs because it can be a very hard read at times.

I borrowed this audiobook from the library knowing only that the genre was horror. I definitely should have looked into it more before diving in. This book is very very dark.
I genuinely still don't think I even understand what I just read. If you like crazy mindfuck stories you will probably like this. Just check the content warnings for sure.

This is probably the most disturbing book I've ever read. Hugely compelling, fantastically translated and completely horrifying. Murata creates so much sympathy for the characters and then tests exactly how long that can last. This book will haunt me for a long time.
