Extremely tragic story dealing with CSA. Very blunt with the absurdity of societal norms that makes our MC crescendo into the crazy ending. I think I like the book and but will never read it again!! All the content warnings.

I don’t know why many are confused by this book. my interpretation: it’s about childhood abuse, specifically sexual abuse. traumatized children find each other in adulthood & traumatized children can cause harm to other children.

it shows the ripple effect of childhood trauma & how it lasts into adulthood. trauma can stunt your growth. the coping mechanisms the main character takes on is because she realizes she can’t escape the world having control over her body & mind. she disconnects herself as a survival mechanism.

My current favorite novel of all time, but difficult to recommend because of it's very twisted subject matters. What can I say, I love it when a woman writer explores weird topics. Interesting social commentary. Very graphic depictions of abuse that makes me sick and heart-broken, which helps make the writing very effective and powerful. Those who are triggered by these topics please stay away.

I don’t know what I just read…. It’s good, really good in some ways, but not at all what I was expecting and intense. Very very intense. The cover does not prepare you for what you are about to read. It speaks excellently to anyone who has ever felt like an alien on this planet, or questioned the status quo of society. Be sure to check the trigger warnings before reading but it’s worth the ride.

This is very much a book that I read.
It was definitely an experience. Maybe not a good one, but an experience nonetheless.
If it had been bad, I would've DNFed, but Sayaka Murata has a way of constructing the narrative that just sucks you in no matter how uncomfortable it gets.
And as always, the she gets it. The social commentary from an "outsider" view is both funny and tragic, and made me very grateful for the fact that I'm as straight as an ellipsoid.
Mind the trigger warnings, please. I didn't read them and was caught completely off guard thinking it was going to be a silly goofy time like "Convenience Store Woman" was.

i started this book after reading convenience store woman, having no idea what it was about or what it would contain. needless to say i was shocked reading this book. throughout the book, a very innocent and simple narrative voice is used to describe things that are incredibly horrific. the contradiction of this makes the book all the more creepy and disturbing. i think this feeling was intentional by the author, and in my opinion it is a sign of extremely good writing that she was able to capture that. murata uses the grotesque imagery to shine a light on the dangers and confinements of modern society and capitalism. the way natsuki interprets the world around her, mistaking her trauma and trauma responses for magical powers is a uniqe take that shows the terrifying effects of trauma. genius book that while i physically cringed while reading it i couldn’t put down.
