Probably my favorite dark, morbid, messed up book. I wanted something more extreme than Tender is the Flesh, and got exactly that. Some parts were hard to get through, but just added to the plot. The ending was shocking.

I think this is the strangest book I’ve ever read. What at first felt like a relatable tale about being “othered” quickly divulged into absurdity that I’m not quite convinced was symbolic. Don’t get me wrong, I loved this book. It was a wild ride. I feel like every (long) chapter changed what the goal of the book was. Aside from commentary on being an outsider (which was very relatable as a queirdo) and surviving both spoken and unspoken heteronormative expectations, I’m not really sure what this was about on a deeper level. Maybe that was the point… This one will stick with me for a long time.
