The graphic memoir of a girl's coming of age during the Islamic Revolution in Iran. I know very little about the history of Iran. I don't think that I have ever read any books about the subject and I don't recall ever learning about it in school. So the things that happened in this book were pretty new to me. I liked learning about it from this perspective because it was first hand. And while, it is first hand from someone who is of a higher social class and who was European educated, it still recounts what the author remembers as a young girl. Throughout the book I felt really scared for "Marji." There were parts of this book (including the end) that were really heartbreaking. In some ways it wasn't an easy read because of how concerned I was. But I am glad I read it and I look forward to reading the next one.

Not one of my favorites. Maybe it was getting into the history or the names, but I just couldn't latch onto this one. I was torn between loving the drawings for God and war while hating the close-mouthed conversation that was happening for the majority of the book. I enjoyed Maus much more as a historical graphic novel.
