Just when I thought the story was over, Shelby Mahurin came out with a spin-off series from the beloved, âSerpent & Doveâ trilogy, but this time focusing it on a certain character who you may recognize, CĂ©lie. While this book can be considered a standalone/ new series on its own, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND you go back and read the, âSerpent & Doveâ trilogy as a lot of things that happened in those books connect to CĂ©lieâs story, as well as bringing back the characters from the previous series too. This story introduced a new set of challenges specifically for, CĂ©lie as she was the first ever huntswoman within the Chasseurâs. CĂ©lie wanted to fight to protect the innocent from the evils lurking in the world, but when a new evil comes about leaving bodies drained of their blood, a whole new mystery begins.

I was very hesitant going into this book, because even though I loved Serpent & Dove I wasnât a huge fan of the second and third of that series. But I wanted to give this one a try, and I am so glad I did because I absolutely loved it!
We follow Celie after the events of Gods & Monsters as she struggles to find her place. She has always been the perfect girl based on societal expectations, but after the war on the witches, she wants to prove to herself and everyone around her that she is strong. A series of murders begins to happen as she begins to get involved. In the case, she is abducted by some vampires. As she navigates through this new land, new creatures, as well as try to find the murderer, she grows in her understanding of herself.
This book has everything you want. It has adventure, mystery, secrets, banter, romance, and definitely some angst. I loved all the characters in this book, new and old. Celie, as a main character grew on me in this book. I was never a huge fan of her in the original trilogy but she definitely redeems herself in this one. It was very easy to relate to her as she struggles with the pole of societal expectations as well, wanting to be herself. The character growth is very strong in this one.
This is a slow burn romance, and in the beginning, I was a little frustrated that nothing was really progressing with that part of the plot, but once it picks up, it is sizzling and angsty. I cannot wait to see where itâs going to go in the next book.
Iâm not gonna give any spoilers, but the ending was action-packed, and I was at the edge of my seat. The ending leaves off at a cliffhanger, and the epilogue threw me for a loop. Some parts of the main plot line were a little predictable but it did not take away from my enjoyment of this book. I am so excited for the second book, and I really hope that this new series will not suffer the same way the original trilogy did.
Thank you to Harper Collins Canada for sending me an eARC of this book and exchange for an honest review.
