This was a new genre for me to read. Actually, I think it was the first collection of short stories that I have ever read! It was good, but not great. I definitely prefer to read a novel with one continuous story. However, I thought that the writing was good and for the most part, the stories kept my interest. Of all the stories, my top three were: A Temporary Matter (a story about a couple who suffer the effects from having a baby that was born stillborn), Interpreter of Maladies (a story about a man who gives tours and who within hours falls in love with one of his married customers) and The Third and Final Continent (a story about a man who travels to three continents and finally makes a life for himself and his wife in America).

Lahiri's mastery of narration and description of emotion easily explicates the "Pulitzer Prize Winner" sticker on the cover of the book. After having read The Namesake, I was interested to see how she carried the first-generation immigrant experience throughout her other stories. Each is remarkably well done. With each passing story, my admiration for Lahiri grows into a canopy of respect for the author. I cannot wait to read her latest set of short stories; I know they as well will not disappoint.
