An emotional story of love, shame, lies, and at the centre of it all; family. Nell and Dougie are lost in their own ways and their individual journeys to the Outer Hebrides bring them back to life.

I really enjoyed the synchronicity of the timelines as they progressed, and North’s descriptions of nature were beautiful- there was clearly a love letter to Harris embedded within her novel.

Overall though, I did find the story a little dull and predictable and it didn’t really grab my attention like I hoped it would.

I admired the writing, characters and sense of place but for some reason I got half way through and lost my connection with the narrative.

Possibly it was the wrong book at the wrong time.
