Took a little longer to get into than I thought but then I was really into it. Great characters with some mystery and romance. Definitely opening for another book.

When I first read the synopsis of this book for BOTM, I wasn’t overly excited. I figured what the hell, it’s fantasy & seems OK. I’ve for sure read my share of bad BOTM choices, what was one more?

This book starts slow. I wasn’t a potential DNF for me, but boy was I thinking I’d gotten myself into another BOTM stinker. I kept pushing on in the hopes it would get better or at least not worse. Thank the skies it got better. I loved it. Slightly before “The Scribe” section of the book - I was hooked. It started to show more of itself as a mystery with fantasy undertones. You learned more as the characters did - about a world they thought they knew everything about but turns out they were left in the dark much like the reader.

The writing style is great - which helped me get through the slower start. The surprises made sense even if you came to the conclusion before details were revealed. The characters started out going either way of likeable or not, but by the end - I liked every MC. I enjoyed reading each persons perspective when initially some of them it was like… pass. I also enjoyed the fact the ending left room for this to be a standalone story or with potential for more (prequels, sequels - I’d be excited for any or all. I’d also be ok with none).
