3.5 stars for me, rounding down because I don't feel any compulsion or desire to read it again.

I'm not sure how to review this. It's about withdrawing from life, healing, searching for truth while being terrified it will be revealed. It's about isolation, and community. It's about life, death, and living.

3.5 stars. This was not at all what I was expecting! I’ve been a fan of Tess since I was 12 years old and this was nothing like any of her other books, but I loved it! The dark, gothic atmosphere was amazing and it totally had me on edge. The ending felt a bit rushed but was still satisfying.

This story was interesting but I didn't get the creepy vibe I thought this one would've had. Creepy things happen, but I just didn't get that sense. I don't know if it's the way the story is told or the circumstances surrounding the ghost, but The Shape of Night was more run of the mill mystery than psychological suspense, and I definitely didn't find anything romantic about the story. Haunting or flesh and blood killer, either way, this mystery was way too easy to figure out, and you don't have to be an avid reader of the genre to get there. In the end, it's not a bad story, I just expected so much more.

When I started reading The shape of night by Tess Gerritsen I thought it was a thriller about a haunted house. Sort of like the show The haunting of hill house, which was excellent. I definitely did not expect ghost smut. I generally love Tess Gerritsen as an author. She usually writes great crime fiction, but originally started out as a romance novelist. I have read several of her books in high school. However, this book is something else. Basically the plot is about a woman who tries to escape a past, secret sin by temporarily moving to a seaside town, while writing a cookbook and drinking too much. Except she falls in lust with a dead guy that has a bdsm fetish. Why did I continue reading? Well, I kind of wanted to know what the secret was that she was hiding. After that became obvious (which is way before it's revealed in the book) I wanted to know what or who was behind the other deaths related to the supposed haunted house. Sad to say, not even the ending excited me. This book is definitely going in my donate pile and I don't say that often or easily.

I like murder mysteries. I like smut. I do prefer them to be separate books though. This is such a bizarre story and yet predictable at the same time.

The thing is, over 100 pages in I have not learned one single thing that I didn't already know after reading the dust jacket. The book isn't even 300 pages long! Moving on.

The last couple of chapters made this book impossible to put down! I needed a whiskey after finishing this one.

Ava travels to a small coastal town in Maine to get away from her life in Boston and most importantly a tragic secret. The minute she walks into Brodie's Watch, the old home she is renting, she feels at peace in the home-until she starts to hear strange noises.

Right away this book drew me in and kept my attention from beginning to end.

Ava Collette a cookbook author needing to getaway from some past memories, decides to rent a home in a coastal town in Maine. She tells everyone she needs space and quiet to begin writing a new book about New England cuisine. The old home she’s rented is called Brodie’s Watch named after it’s original owner Brodie a sea captain who died at sea over a hundred years ago. Soon after she arrives she learns the previous tenant another woman left abruptly even before her lease was up. One evening Ava begins to hear noises during the night soon she comes face to face with a ghost who looks just like Captain Brodie and she can feel him when he touches her face. She decides to dig into the homes history and soon discovers that the previous home owners have all died there and they were woman. As her feelings grow for the ghost of Captain Brodie and there were some steamy scenes, she begins to wonder if she stays there any longer she may be in danger herself! I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I found myself completely engrossed and it was hard to put down! This book will have you lost in the small town and the secrets they keep along with ghost and some steamy scenes mix in some mystery it’s the perfect combination! Five stars!
