This was all over the place. The first half was entertaining and well-paced. We got some character development and some fun monsters. The grandma was amusing and frustrating. But about halfway through, character development was replaced exclusively for plot and fantastical horror. Nothing made sense, there were so many references to random characters and different myths and made up things that it was hard to track who was who and character motivations. I didn't really buy the hero setup for the main character. He's a professor, thrown into a world of myths and legends and apocalypse, his grandma refuses to explain anything, and yet he is ready with a sword to defeat every evil creature that stands in his way? Didn't make sense. And the women besides the grandma were SO poorly developed. They were wallpaper.

The interesting premise and well-paced first half couldn't overcome the terrible second half and I ended the volume with no interest in continuing the series.
