🙂
i know this series really is quite old at this point, but you can feel it. the writer really wants to go in on cain being, like, the sexy playboy troupe, but we don't really ever see him being flirty unless the plot demands it - like, it doesn't feel like an integral part of his character. which, on that note, his two closest relationships in the story are with mary weather and riff: the first of which reads as a relatively normal (if overprotective/emotionally distant) sibling dynamic, and the latter feels like the author wanted to give cain a romance with a man and couldn't. cain and riff's relationship reads more romantic to me than cain's relationships to any women in the series, and i have no idea if it was intentional, or if it's just that i live in the future and i've read plenty of actually gay characters (mostly in fanfic, tbh) written with relationships similar to theirs.
ending on cain telling riff he loves him while they're both being crushed to death feels a little... you know... AND I CAN'T TELL IF WE'RE SUPPOSED TO READ IT AS ROMANTIC OR NOT. it's making me feel crazy.
and none of that is even beginning to touch on the other aged weirdness:
jizabel's nearly fetishistic fixation on making cain suffer,  cain's birth mother going literally mad because of forced incest, mikaila's entire character and backstory, the treatment of women in this series, overall, really.

generally, i liked this series quite a bit, warts and all, but i don't know if i would give it a full readthrough again.

my intake from The Cain Saga & Godchild:

- Kaori Yuki loves dark, taboo shit
- Riff and Cain were very gay for each other

What an ending 🙈 it was perfect! There was no way that Riff, Cain or Alexis could survive, but maybe, just maybe....

I like the idea of Merry and Oscar. They have gone through so much together that there was no other way than to marry each other. Oscar is the only one that will ever truly understand Merry. He’s going to be a good husband for her. I wonder if Clehadol will ever visit them? I hope so, somehow. They were a good team in the end.

That Augusta was the real culprit came out of nowhere 😱 I was so convinced that Alexis was he evil one. If was the best plot twist ever, well, apart from Riff being one of the puppets that is.

So now it’s over. After nearly 15 years, I have finished the series and I’m happy I did. The ending was so good and I will always come back to Cain, Merry, the poisons and the criminal cases. Victorian London hs me in it’s grip and I have no desire to escape.

That’s all 😉

A rather good ending and I'm liking just how much Kaori Yuki has such a good understanding of British culture and my hat's of to the whole lot!
