Like any anthology, some of these poems struck me on a personal level and some didn't have any effect on me whatsoever.
That being said, I enjoyed the majority of the works held within.

This book is well-named--it's a massive, encompassing compendium of outlaw poetry. I think this kind of poetry, read when I was in high school, was what drew me to contemporary poems. Poems of sprawling self-expression, without literary language, the use of "I," unpredictable stanza breaks, use of capital letters for no reason except perhaps to shout it out, subject matter that is all about messy living, this I read with wide eyes and a sense that I had at last met my people.

To be honest, my tastes have changed over the years and now I spend more time with poems that explore traditional forms, word-play, and imagery. But the raw power of the voices contained in this book still attract me. Highly recommended.
