This book is definitely one of its time and contains more ableism and racism than I really expected, but I think its writing shines through and the story is extremely compelling

I really mixed feelings about this one.
The author is clearly racist and ableist and does little to hide. However a very big theme this memoir is that he is not a good person. It's a very raw retelling of his time moving to New York to perform as a drag queen. The story is heavily centered around an abusive relationship with an escort. The author does NOT sugarcoat the experiences or his own involvement with drug use, club culture, hookup culture, escort culture and the bad things be did in them.

I was gonna read this for my book club, but my work schedule ended up changing last minute so I couldn’t go and decided not to continue with this one. I was already considering dnf’ing, though (as you might have guessed, since I only got 60 pages in). The narration was stressing me out – it’s often very difficult for me to read books about people making destructive choices. Plus, there were a few off-color jokes about trans people that were probably “acceptable” in 2006 when this was published, but with everything going on right now in the news… it was just a bit much for me to deal with.

Don’t remember what possessed me to get this audiobook, but I wish I’d listened to is years ago because it felt a bit old hat to me now. Kilmer-Purcell’s story is certainly detailed and specific, but here was perhaps a tone here that didn’t work for me. A little needy in its attempt to be outrageous. Do appreciate the frankness, though.
