nightflyers: 1.5 stars — the series did a far better job with the characters and themes
override: 4 stars — arguably the least "busy" but the concept was cool
weekend in a war zone: 3.5 stars — interesting premise, could have even been longer & expanded on its themes
and seven times never kill man: 2 stars — messy worldbuilding, lifeless characters, pointless
nor the many-colored fires of a star ring: 2.5 stars — i was just bored
a song for lya: 3.5 stars — probably presents the alien society with the most potential, but manages to be really uninspired; some really intriguing theological elements but ultimately neither are explored to their potential

overall thoughts: pretty standard 70s/80s scifi that never really pushes any boundaries; maybe at its time, it was more "progressive", but i just found myself uninterested the majority of the time, counting pages until a story was over, etc.. little re-readability for me, personally

Just to be clear, I only read the first story. It was an accident that I chose the “& Other Stories” version. Maybe I’ll choose to read them some day, at which point I’ll add to this review.

The story was compelling to me. Science fiction, horror and mystery were all wrapped up in this once, but they meshed together rather than act as different parts.

It has ghosts, aliens and psychic powers. Something deadly also roams the ship but its motives remain a mystery until the very end.

Marantha was the star of this book, or maybe costar is a better description. She is an “improved model” of humanity, which makes her immensely useful in most situations. Physicals aside, she is like the world’s best chess player; she can predict what will happen, or what her opponent might do, and take action or not based on those predictions.

It can’t be called a happy ending but the aliens are unveiled, the threat is more or less dealt with, and the Nightflyer continues onward until their inevitable death.

The main reason for the higher rating is that it covered so much territory and somehow managed to wrap all of it up without it feeling forced. It’s also fairly easy reading and allowed me to move through it quickly.
