You know it's a book about facts when the subjects of said book have tried to get it banned and sue the author for 'leaving the wrong impression'.

If you're looking for a quick read, this isn't it. If you're looking for something comprehensive and super well researched, this is the book.

Putin's People is now my favourite book about modern Russia. The author Catherine Belton, a former FT correspondent, is incredibly experienced and that is reflected in her writing as well as her access to a variety of sources. Her many years of research and interviews provide an unparalleled insight. As she has followed many of the characters for more than two decades she can accurately discuss their changes of fortunes along the way.

In terms of content, the book is quite dense so might not be a good first book about modern Russia. That said, the writing style is very accessible so I wouldn't necessarily discourage others from reading it. If you are new to Russian politics i would suggest getting a physical copy of the book so you can more easily flip back and forth.
