The writing can lean a little too far into overdone for my taste, but there is no denying the power of her story. I enjoyed the back and forth timeline from her childhood to her present. It really helped reinforce the feeling of time folding in on itself. The lessons we need to learn presenting again and again.

That was good enough to bump from a three to a four for me.

I recently started a running program with Tommy Rivs. Tommy Rivs is a well known distance / endurance athlete and he works for the iFit platform. My brother and sister-in-law love his programs and I decided to try one out. I immediately realized why. He is so down-to-earth, knowledgable and kind. I was shocked when my brother told me Rivs was diagnosed with lung cancer during the COVID pandemic. At first they thought it was COVID, but it ended up being lung cancer and he almost died. He is still training and producing iFit videos but on a different fitness level than before. I was fascinated and loved him even more

While I was googling his story I came across this book, written by his wife Stephanie. They met at BYU-Hawaii, and I realized that they were of the same faith as I am. I eagerly started to read this book. It is so well written, with beautiful poetic language. Stephanie’s dad died of lung cancer when she was a teenager, and she goes back and forth between her dad’s diagnosis and how it affected her as a kid and Riv’s diagnosis and how it affected her as a wife and mother, a mother with first hand knowledge how a parent’s death can affect you.

As I said, it was beautifully written. She is no longer a member of my faith, but it was interesting to see how faith and spirituality played a role in her journey. Sometimes I got a little lost with the beautiful language and ended up skimming some. This is totally a fault of mine, not Stephanie’s. I can’t appreciated beautiful language as much as she is capable of writing beautiful things.
