This book is told from the POV of Binti. She is the first of her people to leave and was offered placement at the Oomza University to study the Galaxy. Binti runs into some interlanet conflict on her way there and we follow that story. This story is full of culture from the Himba people as well as the Meduse. It was a very fun sci-fi read.

After finishing this book, I researched the HIMBA tribe. What I liked most about the book was learning about the cultural differences. I love reading books that teach an audience about other traditions and ancestry. The sci-fi part of this book is creative and fascinating. If you love those two things, you will enjoy this book immensely. It’s a quick read. Also, this is a 3 book series so I will be adding the second book to my TBR.

A relatively decent novella of a trilogy. Okorafor's themes of colonialism, classism and racism with a sci-fi spin is an interesting backdrop for a story about a war between humans and space jellyfish-like creatures. Interested to see where the second book will take Binti.

This had a lot of interesting ideas, but Dany and I found it to be slightly lacking.

Cool worldbuilding. The prose left something to be desired, but the end had me intrigued as to what follows.

I love so much of what this is trying and how it's doing it. Especially the the little details, the security making her take off her jewelry, the odd tech, the very classic star trek plotting, and how Nnedi plays around with identity and first generation college stories is very intriguing. However, I did not find the way the story is structured convincing. It flips from murder and racial antipathy to UN esque summit so fast that I'm thinking of suing for whiplash. That being said, I am really looking forward to reading her adult fiction, and kids will love this.
