This is the first time I’ve come across the term cli-fi when describing a genre of fiction, I’ve usually classified books I’ve read about climate change disaster as speculative fiction, but cli-fi is much better.

This story follows the female protagonist through a sudden climate incident which sees London, and by inference, much of the south of England flooded just as she has given birth to Z.

It follows them through a series of encounters invoolving the break down of society as the situation worsens, and eventually toward a possible resolution, both personal and bigger.

I really enjoyed the episodic nature of Megan Hunter’s writing, it suited this story, telling diary-sized snippets from the life of the main protagonist, and the ever complicating life she was leading to keep her and her child safe and nurtured.

Though it is short, ‘The End We Start From’ packs a real punch, exploring emotions and interpersonal relationships in the face of adversity.

This compact book is sparsely told but so evocative - it’s terrific how much Hunter is able to convey with minimal, poetic text. I enjoyed the experience the whole way.

The story itself is about a brand new mother who flees London as disastrous flood waters are desolating the country. Her journey through encampments, shelters, and sanctuaries is a scary look at what could possibly happen if the tides continue to rise. But it’s not without hope either.

I was unsure what to give this. I highlighted so much of this book because the authors way of describing things with prose was so clever & stunning to read. However, there were times where I feel like the writing was unnecessarily complex & I wasn't really sure what the author meant.

Hard writing style to get used to, but an interesting story that you piece together just a much from what isn't written as what is written.

A quick and unique read. Though I found it difficult to really connect with the characters or the story due to the limited description.
