I didn’t necessarily love this book. I didn’t really love the characters, and I don’t know if I really expected anything to happen. But I don’t think the book is trying to say there’s destiny. In fact, I think it’s the opposite. Sometimes people end up together and help each other and try to be loved by each other. They aren’t going to be perfect. And they aren’t necessarily meant to be. Sometimes it can work out for a bit and sometimes it doesn’t, but hopefully life helps you have a person to stick with anyway.

I don’t think Connell and Marianne are good people and they’re not always good friends. Luckily, they still care about each other and help each other right before saving might not be possible anymore. Maybe we can’t ask for more than that in normal people. That’s just who we are, and that’s the best we’re going to get.

For me, this book felt like a dark academia rainy cloudy novel. I could smell the books, the old wood and the smoke.

The back and forth between being together and not being can be tiring. I wish Marianne and Connell to just be like « normal people » and accept their feelings sooner, but this story wouldn’t exist this way. They are both mentally ill, maybe even making each other ill. I don’t who between the who has more power on the other ? They’re definitely influencing each others. I wish Marianne would have a happier life with her family, maybe without her brother she wouldn’t be that unconfident & masochist.

also didn’t except sex scene since the beginning but I understand why. It’s not a love story but the growth of their fucked up relationship. Also, I feel like sex is an important part of their relationship ?

I didn’t expect the ending to be like this. It’s not a happy ending, it’s just the same as their relationship has always been. They’re together but life take them away of each others and they might be together again later.

This book will stay with me. As soon as I started it I was wrapped into the story. The synopsis sounded to me like the average story of two young people and their drama but it is so much more than that. This story is beautiful and Sally Rooney told it in such a descriptive and raw way. I look forward to reading more from her.

I think the main thing that drew me in from the beginning is the characters. I didn’t understand why it was called normal people until i actually read it. It’s because they are, genuinely, normal people. They have their flaws and their strengths and they suffer. Connell and Marianne aren’t written like characters, they are written like people. They go through their lives, drifting to and from each other. The love lasts throughout, which is such a human concept. When you fall apart from someone, the feelings and things you had and experienced don't just go away, they stay with you.
I also like how flawed they were. Connell was not a good person and neither was Marianne, and I refuse to believe otherwise. They had good characteristics and did good things, but overall they were not good, but in reality, no one is.
Also, one last thing. The lack of quotation marks is what made this such a good read for me. It felt more natural.

this was truly one of the most beautiful books i have ever read. i have never story a book as real as this one.

it was definitely frustrating at times how odd and confusing the relationship and characters were. but thats the point. both marianne and connell are so relatable in so many ways and even at their worst times, they made sense. even when both of them were communicating at their best, there was still lots of miscommunication and pain, which is so realistic and honestly made their connection even more special. i fell in love with the dynamic of their comfort and pureness from the very beginning. i’m honestly just dumping a bunch of words right now because i’m kind of in shock at how relatable and real this story was. never in my life have i felt so close to and understood by a book. both of the characters were so incredibly real and true and i just wish them both the best.

this is 100 percent reread material ✅

This style of over-simplified prose is hard to get right but this book absolutely nails it. The skeletal writing  feels clear and deliberate instead of lazy, and offers a clean backdrop for a moving and devastating coming of age story and its millions of moving parts (popularity, class, education, sex, mental illness, relationships with friends, family and partners).
And still most of all it's a love story. A very beautiful one.
