As someone who’s not big on horror, I didn’t find it too much to handle but I still loved the thrills. This was very compelling (and stressful by the end!) and I liked all the fairytale nods within, something that is a childhood connection for the MC but also has been worked into the plot itself. With all the thrills, the reveals were quite obviously hinted at throughout so I would’ve liked those hints to be more subtle and create more mystery as I’d anticipated much of what was to come.

There are many content warnings to be aware of, body horror in particular is frequently utilized.
While colonialism and racism are essential to the plot here and sexual violence is a large part of both, I would’ve preferred if the main threats against the female character were not constantly brought back to the threat of rape.

Still I enjoyed how the story evolved and looking forward to continuing to read more by Moreno-Garcia.

This book was a little hard for me to get through because a lot of the beginning felt really repetitive and I was confused for many parts of it. I wish i could have seen catalina play a bigger role and there to be more cute moments between Noemi and Francis. Noemi was such a frustrating character at times and I had a hard time connecting to her. I wanted to understand her motivations past getting a degree in anthropology. A lot changed towards the end though when the gloom finally started becoming a bigger part of the plot. The details were genuinely so vulgar and I had a hard time reading it at night but I think it’s the most interesting part of the book. For how massive of a twist it was, it did feel a little rushed (maybe that was the authors intention) and the ending felt too simple. Also there were some unanswered questions like how did the woman in the village know to make the tincture and how the wounds got healed.

Mexican Gothic is perfect for fans of books like Dorian Gray or Wuthering Heights. It brings together the classic mystery of gothic tropes, and brings the reader into the eerie world of High Place. Despite leaning on traditional gothic themes, the book wasn't predictable at all. Noemi's family history in the paint business and the botany interests of the Doyles bring scientific elements into the story that make it really stand out. It's filled with mystery and successfully creates a unique world for the reader - I'm already craving a sequel! The read is dense, though, and doesn't pick up pace until about two-thirds of the way through. I could have done without some of the
creepy pedophilia like and assault themes
.
