I refrained from rating Jane Eyre when I finished it because I can’t put a sentence together for the life of me at two in the morning. So, here it is:
Jane Eyre is one of those books that you will read, most likely, for all the wrong reasons. Most of the people I know who have taken the challenge have done so either because of school or because they have a list of books to read before one dies. I am the latter, fortunately. I don’t think one can truly treasure the book if you’re being pressured to read it for the sake of a good grade.
In any case, Jane Eyre was very captivating after the first fourth of the book (over 200 pages). That’s where people give up! I guess I understand them because I almost did so as well! It was hard getting accustomed to the use of language as well as the superfluous descriptions Charlotte used in every other page. Dialogue? What is that? If one does decide to undertake this challenge, the very first thing is to forget that exists!
With all that said, there is a point in the book where everything changes, the pivoting point. Then, if you were a committed reader, the language becomes something of the ordinary and the book advances at a rapid pace. I think it took me about to weeks before I finally reached this point. I was mostly just pushing a couple of pages a day and was graciously rewarded at the end.
From this point forward, Jane Eyre becomes one of the most beautiful love stories I’ve ever had the chance to read. Her strength and determination is a true symbolism of everything woman should embody. She always followed her heart and was a creature worth admiring. Although not beautiful, as she is often described, she holds beauty like non-in her time (or at least none that we had the chance to meet). The pity that the reader feels for her is one of the major reasons that kept me going.
I fell in love with many of the characters in the story though and came to hate others; proof of a work of art. I knew I loved the book when at one point there were tears in my eyes.
I hope that many others have the chance to read this book and push to the point of Thornfield, where they shall inescapably fall in love. It is worth it, believe me. If you need an extra push, look at the trailer for the movie! It doesn’t give away much but keeps you wondering.
Edward & Jane forever <3
and no…not Twilight’s Edward.
