I received a few copy from the author in exchange for a review.

This is a short poetry essay but was a fast read. It wasn't an easy read though because it dealt with harsh topics. The feeling I got from the work was a person is severe emotional and mental suffering. Self harm and depressed were elluded to in several write ups and I felt the heaviness of the emotions, the relatability! It felt like someone was speaking my emotions to life. The chapters I was particularly fond of were 'bad friend' and 'magic pen' as they were instantly the most relatable to me. Especially 'bad friend'.

Regardless, I found some spelling errors. 'desert' was written as 'dessert', 'drought' as 'draught' and 'wander' as 'wonder' which in a few ways did ruin the experience in the moment for me. This is why I am rating this book a 4!

It was an emotional and beautiful read nonetheless and I recommend it!

I feel like it’s hard to judge poetry because everyone likes different styles of prose. ⠀

I enjoyed this book and felt that the emotions were raw and real. Ultimately, it’s not my favorite style of prose but I wouldn’t say it was bad. I think others will enjoy it and appreciate the beauty in the words. ⠀

If you like poetry, i’d say it’s worth checking out.

I don't normally read poetry, but when I read good poetry; I know it.
I've read this book 6 times maybe since yesterday, I loved how the words echoed in my brain, I wanted to feel the words deeper, I wanted to write them, I wanted to read them again and again until they're metaphorically tattooed on my brain.
I couldn't decide what my favorite poem is, every poem offers a line that leaves you feeling vulnerable.
Even though I don't normally read poetry, reading these poems felt effortless and easy to relate to, this is definitely good poetry.

First off, thank you to Safah for the free review copy! I appreciate it!

The Ocean is a short poetry book that explores depression and its aftershocks. The poems were relatable and easy to comprehend. It’s really a great job for a second book, however I do have a couple of critiques to hopefully help with future writings!

The main issue I had is that there were some punctuation and grammatical (that didn’t seem necessary for the style or points being made) that I feel should have been caught in editing as well as one noticeable spelling error (and maybe another that I’m not sure was an error but I think was) that just kind of took me out of it for that poem. They were both in “Draught.” The title itself is the word that I think is a spelling error. Based on the poem, I believe it is meant to be called “Drought” (but don’t hold me to that. I could be wrong about that one!). The one that took me out of it, however, was the word “dessert” being written instead of “desert.” Which, I of course knew what word was meant, but the fact that as I read it I read the word “dessert” ruined that imagery for me. It just seems that in a book this short, it would be a little easier for the errors to be caught and fixed in editing.

My 2nd complaint isn’t that important compared the the first. I just wish this book was longer! I definitely feel like this was a short poetry essay rather than a short poetry book, if you know what I mean (if essay was the right word for me to choose). I’d just like to suggest to the author to collect more essays next time until, perhaps, it’s novella length (about 100 pages). I know it seems like a lot, but with poetry you’ll get there in no time!

Keep writing! Take these critiques feedback and use them to excel in your future writings!
