We read this with J, and it was a great read. Mystery, outdoors-themed, and multiple narrators, including a peregrine falcon. He loved it! It was the third of the series and I found it to be the best of the trilogy.

I just didn't love this book or enjoy it quite as much as the last two. I kinda wish it had leaned more into the xenofiction aspect. All told, it's an extraneous addition that's good for a lark, but it's also very clearly written with the specific aim of drawing attention to the falcon's plight- which is not necessarily a bad thing, but if looking at this story purely in construction terms, it leads to some deeper cracks- Bando referring to Sam as a son particularly came out of nowhere, and Bando having a child after the last book established him as very clearly "getting up there" and then the addition of a cell phone, of all things, even as a side mention, just showed that while there was plenty of care put into this book, it should have been a book that stayed entirely in Frightful's head. Sam has always been the main draw to these books for me, and his relationships (and lack thereof) of the people around him has always been one of the most fascinating elements and to see it evolve so abruptly for what isn't even a necessary reason in a tertiary addition to his story is disappointing. not a bad book, but I will likely leave this out of any future rereads of Sam and Frightful's adventures

This continuation was really not necessary. It's about 100 pages too long and quite repetitive. It also is incongruous by picking up right where the first book left off, but then jumping forty years into the future technologically. Like, car phones and cell phones did not exist when the first two books were written, but now they magically appear? Also, I am extremely pro-environmentalism, but this felt like propaganda in a lot of places.
