It's crazy to me that this was written around 1932. The ideas seem to resonate so well with what is now the "future". It's actually really frightening to think about. This definitely gave me perspective on happiness, and life in general. We all strive for "stability", yet this book described a stable society that I would never want to be a part of. For now, I'm happy with instablity.

Whew. This is a hard one to get through in many ways .. and I see why it isn’t scheduled for AO until year 12. Need a palette cleanser .. also… the soma business is curious as I am prescribed a muscle relaxer by the same name

This is a book that might mess you up in the most wonderfully contemplative and squirmy ways a good piece of dystopia/utopia can. I feel that our society today, so many years after its publication in 1932, has a lot of elements that this book criticizes. I'm leaving the rating one star short because of the small parts that expose Huxley's eugenics, racism, and sexism. The questions this book asks are about the pursuit of happiness. Is it worth wiping away all suffering and questioning if that in turn wipes away science and art? Is perfect comfort, instant gratification, and perfect "happiness" really worth doing away with beauty and wonder? I couldn't help but be reminded of how U.S culture is full of urges to instantly own things, and instantly feel better when we are feeling emotionally and physically sub-par. There is an over abundance of marketing ploys today that try to sell happiness and comfort with all things from food to self-help books to "self love/care" items and packages. We can download apps and games and recipes and friendships and books and music all at the tips of our fingers. I loved the different points of view and desire each character represented. I also love how Henry Ford's name was satirically used. Wonderful classic. Worth the short read.

After reading this book it makes me wonder why this was not required of Advanced Reading students when I was in school. Regardless, it is a powerful book. The saddest part for me is that after reading his social commentary from 1931, it is clear that we have learned nothing. Humanity continues its ignorance.
