Was not a huge fan of this book. There were some interesting points in the book but overall not a huge fan. It is not a book that is lightly to stay with me.

A very pleasant read. The style is flowing and humorous despite the rather grim events that keep happening. It would be difficult to try and characterise this novel though as there are touches of the whodunit and of the supernatural against the backdrop of the publishing world in post WWII London involving a set of often grotesque types.

Like some other Spark novels, this one has a certain manic over-attachment to a single theme or motif—the irritating repetition of the epithet "pisseur de copie"—which leaves it slightly askew but not so much as to create a real feeling of surrealism or even zaniness. Instead, it makes the novel feel misshapen or ill-proportioned, as if Spark had published an early draft. There is much to enjoy in this novel, but it is quite often laughter that sneaks in between winces.
