Burned through this [compelling / devastating] tale in a single day - which bodes well for my 2023 read count, doesn’t it?

Actual rating lands closer to 4.5-stars. Docked a wee bit for the love story that (IMO) was unnecessary and detracted from what was otherwise a tight and powerful story. (See also: Those final pages? I mean, sure - I guess that’s one way to end a book?)

But those are minor quibbles. Overall, a really solid read that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

4.5 stars. I listened to this in audiobook format and really loved the narrator. The whole story was really compelling but the ending was a little dragged out and repetitive.

I am inconsolable, this was devastating and beautiful.

It's always difficult for me to write reviews about books set in contexts or places where I am a foreigner and feel like my opinion on the subject matter is irrelevant. I don't want to impose my perspective as an outsider or participate in any kind of colonial-esque dialogue, but I think this was an amazing read for someone like me. Umrigar touches on the difficulty of coming home, feeling like an outsider to your native environment, how expanding one's world view impacts your ability to relate to your home. There is discussion of class relations, religious intolerance and gender violence. It's a horrifying book at times, with graphic descriptions and there were moments when it filled me with rage, but even still it was beautiful and sad, and somewhat, in some small way, hopeful.

When I began reading this book, I was shocked by all the great reviews. I found the dialogue in the beginning of the book tiresome, but once I got into the second part of the book, I was hooked. Now I can’t stop thinking about this story. It’s definitely not a light read but it is a moving story. I would definitely recommend it.
