This was enjoyable. It leaned pretty heavily into the YA aspect of it during the set-up, but once it got into more traditional Alien territory I thought the set-up paid off.

I checked this book out of the library because I was looking for another book named Alien and the cover on this one was interesting. I did not know there was a series of books based on the Alien movie world. I might have to check out some of the others. And I will definitely be looking for more by Mira Grant.

This was really good. I always like books that let you choose what happens next. I'm an optimist, so I'm going with they get rescued and everybody gets healed up. However, I'm not much for romance, so Kora and Olivia don't last. Neither of them can stand seeing the other because it reminds them of all they have lost. Olivia and Viola are different because they share the losses. So they go their separate ways. After spending some time on Earth, Olivia and Vi decide to continue their parents' life work and start traveling to see different kinds of new life. Oh, and Zagreus gets nuked. Because that's the only way THAT gets solved. Eep!

Uodate: Well for goodness sake it's Seanan McGuire.

It's a quick and fun read.
The parts with biology, xenobiology and gore were excellent. I loved reading about alien science, it was engaging and clearly written out of real interest. Descriptions of xenomorphs brought chills to my spine.

But. It suffers from the YA treatment immensely.
The romance parts are forceful, some feel like they were just randomly put there to fill the quota, like the author was contractually obligated to put a kissing scene every x pages. I am super happy for two girls being in love, but the descriptions of blood and viscera shuffled with teenage angst and cutesy first love were super jarring. Like, either turn down the gore or the wee, can't really have both.

I wish the author wrote something more in the universe, just maybe not YA? Like, the characters can stay, but let it be a regular sci fi horror because those parts in the book were awesome and it would be really interesting to see the author spread her wings.
