I truly love reading fucked up horror books. This would have been even better if there weren't random "written by a man" comments and casual fatphobia, as well as if the plague aspect was explored a bit more, but it still creeped me out multiple times and I found the way the plot twisted and progressed very cleverly built. I predicted a few things but some others came as a total surprise.

This book did a phenomenal job of instilling a sense of dread in the reader. I didn’t think it was possible for a book to make me feel claustrophobic, but The Deep did so. It was a great read and has a lot of potential for a reread. My only gripe is that female characters were not fully developed and did not get the same complexity and writing quality as the male characters.

the incest/child sexual abuse comes from a scene towards the end of the book when one of the characters remembers their mother’s abuse towards them. It is not explicit nor is it penetrative sex, the character’s mother forces him to hug her while she’s naked, and it is implied that she knows it makes him uncomfortable.

Like a lot of horror/thrillers this book suffers from hitting the peak amount of tenseness a person can feel really early on and then maintaining it instead of giving the reader relief then building tension again.  By the end I was skimming.  Bad guy is bad because of mental illness. Wish it had been a short story.  Would be a good premise for a video game.
