Alan Grantz manages to weave three different stories of refugees over time and continents into a tense nail biter of a novel. Usually when you skip from one group to the next, one inevitably falls behind but all three managed to be very strong, perhaps with one hiccup exception where Joseph's story had to go through a timeskip before finishing. Grantz doesn't flinch from explaining the hazards his characters go through, which makes it a satisfying, if not somber, read.

Read it on the recommendation of a teenager - I did feel like it lived up to the expectation! Tells three harrowing stories of the young refugee experience in a way that I hope bursts hardened hearts open and inspires folks to get out and support displaced persons.

I found the book very dark at times. I enjoyed the author. I liked the way each chapter had a good cliff hanger. There are extremely sad moments in the story.

I work with refugee children everyday so I already knew what to expect.
 Except I didn't expect this book yo hit me as hard as it did. I haven't been this emotionally devastated by a book in a really long time. Once the tears started they wouldn't stop.
