I mostly enjoyed this story as an idea, which follows Ada a young woman who cannot get pregnant with her husband after a year of being married. She is a midwife apprentice, learning from her mother. She is accused of being a witch and putting a curse on other women in her town, making them barren. She leaves her home before they can put her to death and ultimately ends up joining a group of women outlaws who were thrown out of their homes by husbands for not producing a child. It’s a (white) feminist twist on a Wild West story.

I agree that parts of this could’ve been better written, and maybe that’s why I had a hard time rating it.

CW: infertility, misogyny, violence, miscarriage, death, guns & gunshots, suicide

This was a really interesting book, unlike anything I’ve read prior. I appreciated reading a western that centered around strong female characters, and I found many aspects of this book interesting and compelling. However, I think execution could have been better and there were iffy aspects about the core messages.

maybe the most disappointed in a book i've been in a long time. queerness is made both accessory and token, and the story north is trying to tell in no way justifies the alternate history she's created for it. absolutely wild to me that you can set out to purport that biological essentialism is bad (but perhaps i'm giving her too much credit?) and then come up with a book that is... very much supportive of biological essentialism. even aside from my own icky feelings about outlawed as a queer person, so much of what north has done here feels like craft malpractice.

I wouldn't say I'm generally a "Western" fan, but if you involve women, especially queer women, I'm going to pay attention. Though the protagonist is a straight white woman, she at least has the good sense to pay attention to those around her who are different, and her naiveté becomes more a thing of the past. Set in a somewhat alternate western U.S., much parallels our present day struggles.
