I loved this book! Way more religious undertones than I expected but makes sense for the time period. The book did a great job of having an interesting premise and setting while also making the reader invested in the characters. Kept wanting to pick this up so I could know what happened next. Would definitely read a sequel.

Great concept, terrible execution. This is a book, that exists, that people can read, even though it feels like a draft.
Outlawed is the most boring book I’ve read this year. The characters aren’t fleshed out an Ada is a one-trick pony narrator. The characters had so much potential to be great, but they never had enough page time to make an impression. Also, there are simultaneously too many and not enough characters? What?!

There’s so much potential in this book, but it falls completely flat for me.

Outlawed is a well written book that explores heavy topics (infertility, racism, sexism, religious bigotry) through the experiences of women in the late 1800s. I read this very quickly and I would recommend this book! But I did not realize that this book would focus on the past experiences of these outlaw women and not the thieving/crimes of them once they were outlaws.

Such a fun book. Action packed, but also sad. Commentary on the treatment of women, black people, and LGBTQ people in history — with a particular focus on the hardships of being an infertile woman.

I love that it takes the narrative of oppression and twists it into one of empowerment. I love the angle of “chosen family” being set in the desert, segregated from society both by choice and by necessity. I love the idea of “outlaws” and “outcasts” being one in the same. Because outcasts are viewed as outlaws — as scapegoats to make them criminals.

The characters are easy to love. The book is the perfect length.

I love the subtle inclusion of queer characters. From trans to gay to bisexual. And yet this is mentioned without it being a big deal. There are no big moments of “coming out.” It’s just matter-of-fact.

I give books 5 stars based on how memorable it is for me. So time will tell if I come back and change my rating to a 5.

The biggest problem with this book is that it could have been so much better than it was. It could have been so inclusive and intersectional and diverse, and could have been a beautiful, in depth story of marginalised people coming together in a world that hates them.

Instead, we got the barest hint of that, with a very self centred, very white narrator that was, honestly, kind of boring.

The worst thing about this book was it wasn't bad. It just could have been incredible.
