only ruby dixon can take the couple of my fave side characters and make it a fucking slog to get through.

if youre struggling to conceive or have fertility issues dont read this book because it will make you feel like shit. kira does nothing but describe herself as "flawed" and "broken" constantly because she is infertile due to a medical reason as a teen. instead of doing something interesting with a character that is not affected by the parasite in the same way the other humans are, the author makes kira a woman tormented and unbearable due to it.

"It was his choice to mate me despite knowing my flaws." - Kira (yes the 'flaw' is her being infertile.)

the actual plot beats of the evil aliens from book 1 returning are interesting but are too few compared to the many scenes of the author constantly reminding us of her pregnancy fetish.

the way everyone treated harlow was also so fucked up but i dont want to spoil too much. to me it just further illustrates how the characters will act out of character just when it's most convenient to the plot.

vektal and georgie continue to be so unlovable in this book as well. as if theyre the only two people that matter to each other and everyone else can die for all they care.

and my personal fave thing to hate on is how little the translator stuff makes sense. how can aehako not know what a "tub" is, but knows what calling someone "randy" means?

I enjoyed reading about the relationship between outgoing, fun-loving, flirtatious, Aehako, and shy, introverted, somewhat repressed, Kira. I thought they balanced each other out well and had fairly good communication. I loved the fact that they chose one another as mates without the influence of the khui and I loved how gone they were for one another. I was incredibly happy for Kira and glad that the author designed things so she rescued herself. I’m not sure what’s happening with the Harlow plot and her secret captor (I can’t believe everyone was so blasé about her disappearance) but I’m here for this. Kira is a virgin in this much like Raashok is in his book (book 2) and I think that in both cases, this was approached very well without moralizing or patronizing either character. What I do think was treated a little awkwardly in this was infertility- I didn’t mind the HEA but I think Kira was a good example that could have shown that the women were valued beyond their fertility- not that I think they were not, but it could have been a good example. Except of course I’m happy for her if a great desire of hers might be fulfilled.

This has been my favorite of the series. Kira and Aehako are so sweet and I liked seeing a relationship that started with love first and then resonance. Good times all around.
