The events covered in this book are harrowing and have been added to the long list of reasons that I think high altitude mountaineering is a fairly insane pastime. The thing I appreciate most about this book is that it shifts focus away from the wealthy eccentrics fueling the industry and toward the Sherpa, Bhote, and Pakistani high-altitude porters who make it all possible. A worthwhile read for anyone interested in the sport or who would like to learn more about this isolated region of Pakistan and the cultures that produced the brave climbers of the Himalaya and Karakorum.

I've read a fair amount about Everest, but very little about K2. I really enjoyed this story and learning more about K2. This book was well-researched and seemed to have been told in a very respectful way. One thing that was a bit eerie was the early-book discussion about people in Kathmandu waiting for "the big one" - this book was published three years before the massive 2015 earthquake. Definitely a bit eerie to see it predicted by locals.
Further to that, this book was just well-written and interesting. There was less focus on the interpersonal drama than there often is in other, similar accounts, which I appreciated. I'm sure this is because there is just less drama in general than the 1996 Everest disaster, and the fact that the authors of this book were far less involved with the event than authors writing about the 1996 event.
Anyway, all that to say, this was an interesting read for anyone interested in mountaineering, Sherpa climbers, and K2. It's certainly one of my favourites that I've read on the topic.

This is one of many types of mountaineering media I have consumed in the past two years and once again it's astounding how you can't just pinpoint to one thing that goes wrong, or one decision that changed everything. It's always a chain reaction and it's devastating.
As always with these books it's at times a bit too detailed with mountaineering lingo but I really appreciated all of the historical, cultural and political information of this region and the biographical aspects, telling the life stories of the distinguished Sherpa Climbers and High Altitude Porters that make these - unfortunately often times deadly - adventures for all kinds of people possible.
If you liked INTO THIN AIR by Jon Krakauer this book is a must read!
As always with these books it's at times a bit too detailed with mountaineering lingo but I really appreciated all of the historical, cultural and political information of this region and the biographical aspects, telling the life stories of the distinguished Sherpa Climbers and High Altitude Porters that make these - unfortunately often times deadly - adventures for all kinds of people possible.
If you liked INTO THIN AIR by Jon Krakauer this book is a must read!
