This book was so much fun to read! Do yourself a favor and just go out and start buying The Dresden books by Jim Butcher! They are so good!
So, what is this book about? Well this book is about a wizard named Harry Dresden who lives in Chicago. Harry helps people find things, looks into paranormal activity, etc.. he does not do love potions or anything like that. Harry is a good guy who often finds himself in bad situations mostly on his own accord. In this book there is a brutal double murder that the Chicago police call Harry in to try and help them out. We soon learn these homicides are due to the use of magic. It is up to Harry help the police find out who is responsible. This is where all hell breaks lose and the list of dead bodies grows as the murders through magic continue.
This book reminds of the old detective stories from the 30's and 40's. I love how Harry is always narrating the story. This book is a page turner and just fun to read. I put it on my reading schedule but I just found myself reading it more than anything else I am currently reading. This book is short but you are drawn in and instantly find yourself liking and hating characters. Right now I love Harry, I have mixed feelings about Murphy the detective you calls on Harry to help solve crimes, I hate Harry's "pal" Morgan. He is like a watcher who monitors Harry sent from the counsel that controls all wizards. He makes sure Harry doesn't break any of the laws of magic.
This book is fast paced, very well written and just a blast to read! I am so looking forward to the next Dresden book Fool Moon. I can already tell this is going to be a fun series!

Reread review: Oh, how I missed the world of Harry Dresden! Still one of my favorite series.

I'm just not a fan of detective novels. This one was well done though. Basically, it's a detective novel with a wizard as the detective. Good fun. Harry Dresden is definitely an awesome character. The book also hosts a slew of well developed supporting characters including a female cop and a wise-cracking, spirit embodied skull. Good times.

Fun, funny, creepy, and cool. Loved the hints of back story that will hopefully be explored in future books, love how he isn't quite the "dashing hero", love that he isn't a good liar. Looking forward to reading more Dresden files.

So, I have been on a tear and reading first appearance books in every mystery series I could find. That led me to Storm Front by Jim Butcher. I knew about the Dresdin Files from the old TV show but hadnt read the books. I plan to read them all now. The book pulled off the impossible - combining magic and demons with a traditional mystery novel. It worked perfectly. I love how Harry is powerful in magic but very vulnerable as a human. i can't give it 5 stars because I dont like the plot device of putting everyone in the book at odds with the hero, even friends. That was the only real downfall though. I'd recommend this to anyone who loves mysteries.
