Attempts to answer that age-old question: why DID Yankee Doodle stick a feather in his cap and call it macaroni?

This hilarious look at the "origins" of the song Yankee Doodle features an eager pony and his very cranky owner who does not want to go to town. Includes an afterword about the song. A hilarious addition to patriotic units. Recommended for grades K-2.

This book is for a very quirky kid. It's written by Tom "[b:The Strange Case of Origami Yoda|7150174|The Strange Case of Origami Yoda (Origami Yoda #1)|Tom Angleberger|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1328813137s/7150174.jpg|7415356]" Angleberger, which is how it ended up on my radar. I had a laugh reading it to myself and outloud to my fellow librarians but it's not going on the storytime shelf. It's best for an older child who knows the "Yankee Doodle" song and has a very dry sense of humor.

It's odd. I laughed, not sure what kids will do though!

Loved it until the last couple of pages; I can't really explain it... The ending just didn't fit or something.
Crankee Doodle sounds like so many kids (and sometimes me), so I thought it was pretty funny. Plus, there were some interesting tidbits about Yankee Doodle thrown in there. If read aloud super exaggerated, I think it could be fun for a story time, but at the same time, the negativity might be too much for the little ones.

Going with picture books fiction shelf, BUT I did learn some stuff here - like why in the world the word "macaroni" was used in the song. Hilarious book - laughed out loud!

I seriously laughed out loud while reading this whole book. It's great! My favorite line: "Confound it, pony!"
