I forgot how much fun the mystery of the chamber of secrets was. I had a really fun time reading this, it truly is an improvement from The Sorcerer Stone’s. I felt like Rowling was able to play a bit more with the intricacies and depths of this world. I was so immersed and intrigued even if I knew what was going to happen. Harry Potter in general is written in such a way that is both accessible and immersing. You literally get sunken into this world. I loved the use of detective work that the golden trio do and how it became a signature move. This is an example of well written storytelling where seeds are planted and the inexorable surprise is revealed beautifully. There are moments at the beginning of the story that didn’t seem quite right but always paid off at the end, making up for a very satisfying arc.

My only issue with Chamber of Secrets, is the battle between Harry and the basilisk. It has never quite fit right with me, and I felt like it was strangely rushed. It’s weird because the whole experience feels nice and concise but that bit is a little strange, and I think it has to do with the convenience of Fawkes the phoenix presenting itself out of nowhere. Other than that, the story was excellent. By this time, we are still in Hogwarts grounds investigating local issues, but at the same time planting the huge seeds for the upcoming books. This book simply made me smile.
