Well, this story wasn't a bad story, but I didn't think it was nearly as good as some of the reviews made it seem. I really loved Fried Green Tomatoes when I watched the movie and I was hoping that this would be similar or at least have a similar feel. I kept waiting for some of the funny parts that everyone talked about, but the only part I can remember where I really thought it was funny was when they were talking about death very mater-of-factly on the porch.

Other than that, I guess I just thought the book was alright. I did like seeing Dena change throughout the story. At first, I thought the story was going to be about alcoholism with the way that she was drinking at the start of the book, but this was just a very small part of the book.

The uneven presentation of characters and storylines confused me a bit. I wasn't sure what this story was going to be about, what it was meant to be about. Some funny and real stuff about small town life, but a lot of idealized and stereotypical stuff, too. Uncovering the mystery about Dena's mother was the most original and surprising part of the story and got way too little "screen" time for my tastes.
