This book made me sad - it was so dark. I couldn’t bare watching Nani go through one trauma after another.
In the end,
I did love the narration from Nneka Okoye.
In the end,
Spoiler
I was really glad to see Nani find her freedom. However, it’s clear she is only able to escape the situation because of her background of wealth and connections. Maybe that’s a comment on how difficult it is for survivors of SA and DV to get out. Imagine if Nani had been from a poor background, her ending might have been very different.I did love the narration from Nneka Okoye.

Currently one of my favourite reads this year. However, would say it felt slow at the beginning, but it hindsight that was good as there is a lot to unpack.
Whilst there are “triggering contents” in this book, at the heart of ‘The Middle Daughter’ is the strength in building yourself again and meddling broken but meaningful relationship.
Side note: the relationship dynamic of Nani and Ephraim reminded me of the protagonists relationship in Noor Naga’s “If an Egyptian Could Speak”.
